Perez-led Pirates on the minds of other NCAA coaches

ANCHORS AWAY! For the first time since joining the NCAA, great things are expected from LPU.
San Beda College was mentioned by all NCAA head coaches first on their list of teams-to-beat in the NCAA 93 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
The defending champions had a close second, however.
Lyceum of the Philippines University was the other school mentioned most by the league’s mentors in the preseason press conference on Monday at the MOA Arena.
In the eyes of Arellano University’s Jerry Codinera, Colegio de San Juan de Letran’s Jeff Napa, University of Perpetual Help’s Jimwell Gican, San Sebastian College-Recoletos’ Egay Macaraya, Mapua University’s Ed Cordero, Jose Rizal University Vic Lazaro, and Emilio Aguinaldo College’s Ariel Sison, the Pirates are the biggest threats to the Red Lions and their bid for a back-to-back.
“San Beda, given na talaga e. Pero LPU, maganda talaga takbo nila,” JRU assistant Lazaro expressed.
Most of the coaches reasoned out that the Pirates had the most eye-opening preseason.
In the 2017 Filoil Flying V Preseason, the Intramuros-based squad finally broke through into their very first quarterfinals and then semifinals.
With MJ Ayaay, Wilson Baltazar, and Mike Nzeusseu returning and Jaycee and Jayvee Marcelino and CJ Perez arriving, Topex Robinson’s crew does seem all set for a long-awaited and much-wanted breakthrough in the NCAA.
However, Robinson said the Pirates are actually just part of a nine-team field chasing down defending champion San Beda. “It’s still San Beda and after them, it’s gonna be equal opportunity,” he expressed.
Whatever it is, LPU could start sinking or swimming in its first matchup of the season against Jose Rizal University on Tuesday, July 11.
Opening day of the NCAA 93 is on July 8 at the MOA Arena.
There, the Red Lions battle season host San Sebastian College-Recoletos starting at 2:00 PM. A duel between Final Four teams Arellano University and Mapua University then follows at 4:00 PM.
The 93rd Season of the first and oldest collegiate league will be on S+A, S+A HD, and sports.abs-cbn.com/livestream/ncaa.
