INSTINCT. Gab Dagangon is already seeing improvements from the Perpetual Altas brought about by a sense of survival and urgency.

The University of Perpetual Help Altas have already made their case as one of the more resilient squads in the NCAA.

After losing alpha Alta Scottie Thompson, who went and joined Ginebra in the pros, Perpetual finished with an 11-7 record last season and barged their way into the Final Four, even forcing a do-or-die match-up against eventual Season 92 champions San Beda College.

Even with the departure of their best player, the crew from Las Piñas fell just one game short of making it to the Finals.

Now, with the sudden decamping of big man Bright Akhuetie to the University of the Philippines, veteran Gab Dagangon is already seeing improvements from the team brought about by a sense of survival and urgency.

“Ngayon parang mas maganda yung takbo [ng team] kasi siyempre, wala na kaming ibang maaasahan kasi nga nawala si Bright,” Dagangon said.

And with the loss of one of their main weapons, a strong bond has been made even stronger, they have no one else to lean on other than themselves, after all.

Asked about who’ll become the first option on offense now that Akhuetie is gone, the stone-faced Dagangon replied with confidence: “'Di ko pa masabi basta marami naman kami e. Naniniwala naman kami sa isa't-isa.”

It’s this strong bond that is keeping their confidence up and their competitive fire burning Their goal: to prove that the Altas’ success doesn’t rely on only one person, but on the team.

“Lahat naniniwala tsaka ganado lagi, gustong manalo,” Dagangon said. “Nakikita ko parang ganado lahat, gustong manalo talaga.”

With their bolstered bond, Dagangon expects the Altas to go all-out in the NCAA Season 93. They are after all, playing with, and for, each other.

“Kailangan kada laro, bigay lahat. Parang wala nang bukas, wala nang susunod para at least walang pagsisihan kung matalo man,” he said.
