San Beda starts title defense with victory vs Baste
WELCOME TO MY HOUSE. Robert Bolick finished what Clint Doliguez and JB Bahio started.

Many teams have improved, but defending champion San Beda College still has the most firepower in the 93rd Season of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

The Red Lions put all of their weapons to good use once more and shot down resurgent powerhouse San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 76-67, on opening day Saturday at the MOA Arena.

All but one of the 13 players sent in by head coach Boyet Fernandez contributed in the scoring column as the defending champions registered a big-time win to begin the season.

Reserves Clint Doliguez and JB Bahio keyed the decisive 14-2 run that erased a three-point deficit and erected a 69-62 advantage inside the last three minutes.

Still, Robert Bolick was there to finish it by pouring in three of his 15 points in that decisive run.

The Golden Stags were going toe-to-toe with San Beda for three and a half quarters until the latter's depth proved itself yet again. “Our defense really stepped up in the fourth quarter,” Fernandez said.

Sent in for Donald Tankoua and Radge Tongco, Doliguez and Bahio did their job at both ends and gifted Fernandez his first win in only his first game back in the NCAA. “Clint Doliguez came in. I don’t really know how many points he scored, but he played good defense to bring back our energy,” Fernandez said.

In the end, Doliguez had six points, two rebounds, and two steals in just 11 minutes of action while Bahio added four points and four rebounds of his own.

Javee Mocon also posted a 15-point, 13-rebound double-double for the Red Lions who survived turning the ball over 25 times. “We still have to learn how to play and win. We simply have to step up every time we play the game,” Fernandez said.

The returning head coach didn’t hold back in acknowledging the tough test San Sebastian sent their way. “Baste really played well today and I salute them,” he expressed.

For the Golden Stags, Michael Calisaan and Renzo Navarro topped the scoring column with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Only scoring seven points in the last seven minutes, however, the season hosts suffered an opening day setback.
