Baste silences home team Arellano to score first win
VISITORS' VICTORY. San Sebastian forced Arellano's crowd to go home without a smile.

With its playoff hopes shining brighter than it has in recent history, San Sebastian College-Recoletos was not going winless after the first week of the 93rd Season of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

The Golden Stags did just that and frustrated Arellano University right in its home gym in Legarda, Manila for a 65-56 decision on Thursday.

Michael Calisaan was the top scorer for head coach Egay Macaraya with 12 points to go along with 13 rebounds. “We’re doing the right thing. Sana magtuloy-tuloy,” the mentor said post-game.

It was defense, however, that allowed San Sebastian to bounce back from its season-opening loss last Saturday

Indeed, Calisaan and company stifled their opponents into 28.6 percent shooting from the field. “Alam naming kailangan naming ma-limit Arellano. That was our target kasi dun naman talaga kami mananalo – sa defense talaga,” Macaraya said.

That defense was spot on right from the start and only allowed eight points in the first 10 minutes.

At the other end, the Stags scored 24 points to mount a massive 16-point advantage after the first quarter.

Still, with the home crowd behind them, the Chiefs made a run as expected and came back to as close as 50-53 inside the last six minutes only to see Renzo Navarro hit a cold-blooded triple straight from the bench to trigger an 8-0 blast for an 11-point lead.

Arellano again threatened at 56-61 with 62 ticks to go on the clock, but Calisaan’s sky-high putback kept them at bay once and for all.

Allyn Bulanadi and JM Calma chipped in 10 points apiece in Baste’s rise to 1-1. “Everybody stepped up. Give credit to the boys, they played very well,” Macaraya expressed.

Tied with them in the standings is Arellano which was not able to build on the momentum from its season-opening win.

Kent Salado was the lone bright spot for the home team with 15 points before exiting the game with under three minutes remaining due to right leg cramps.
