REBOUND. Teytey Teodoro and JRU played much better than the last time they were on the court.
Teytey Teodoro fouled out with 1:38 still remaining in Jose Rizal University’s game on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
That didn’t matter, however, as he already did more than enough for his team’s first win in the NCAA 93 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Scoring eight of his 26 points in the last seven minutes, Teodoro shot the Heavy Bombers over University of Perpetual Help for a 68-54 decision.
“Magandang sign ‘to kasi kumbaga, bumalik na yung team namin,” a satisfied head coach Vergel Meneses said in his post-game conference.
The two teams were going at it for majority of the matchup and JRU was protecting just a five-point lead inside the last seven minutes.
It was at that point that Teodoro took over and nailed a stepback triple over the defense of Keith Pido to uncork a 14-5 burst that ballooned their advantage to 66-52 with two minutes remaining.
In the decisive run, Meneses’ top gun had two stepback triples as well as a short stab to make sure the Heavy Bombers would not relinquish the lead nor the momentum.
The Altas were not able to threaten for the remainder of the game even though Teodoro incurred his fifth and final foul with under two minutes to go.
The veteran guard also collared seven boards and collected three assists to make up for his lackluster first game. “Ang nakita ko kay Teytey today, he kept on passing the ball. He’s now one of the veterans so he knows how to play the game,” the mentor said.
Abdel Poutouochi contributed 13 points and seven rebounds of his own while Gio Lasquety also had 11 points to help JRU get on the win column following a season-opening loss last Tuesday. “When we played against LPU, wala talagang puso. Ngayon, yung totoong JRU na nakita ko,” Meneses said.
For Perpetual, Prince Eze posted a 12-point, 16-rebound. GJ Ylagan also added 12 markers, but had none in the second half.
While their record is now 0-2, this is technically their first loss after a game.
The Altas won their matchup last Tuesday, but had it forfeited due to an error with their uniforms.
