Coach Vergel: ‘Ang JRU, kahit mahina, lumalaban talaga’
PUSO. To the delight of head coach Vergel Meneses, JRU got back to its gutsy game up against Perpetual.
Jose Rizal University was at the receiving end of a 21-point beatdown to open the NCAA 93 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
After the Heavy Bombers’ 75-96 defeat at the hands of Lyceum of the Philippines University, head coach Vergel Meneses called out his boys for not showing any heart whatsoever.
And three days later, the fiery mentor isn’t backtracking. “Ako, prangka ako e. Yun ang totoo talaga. The last time we played, wala talagang puso, wala talagang pride,” he told reporters on Thursday.
He then continued, “’Di ko talaga nakita yung JRU.”
Last Tuesday, JRU was unable to keep up with the running and gunning Pirates.
Right after that statement, however, Meneses heaped praises on his boys, noting a significant turnaround. “Magandang sign ‘to kasi kumbaga, bumalik na yung team namin,” he expressed.
The head coach said so after the Heavy Bombers bounced back big-time by making quick work of University of Perpetual Help, 68-54.
Whatever difference there is from then to now, Meneses said he wants nothing more than to keep seeing that kind of play. “Baka nanghiram sila ng puso,” he kidded, before adding, “But that’s the way we play.”
He then continued, “Yun ang totoong JRU na nakita ko. Yung JRU, ever since, ‘di naman nagpapatalo. Kahit mahina yung team, lumalaban talaga.”
