Coach Vergel says Teodoro’s assists are JRU’s keys to victory
PASS-SECOND. Already a highly-regarded scorer, Teytey Teodoro knows he needs to improve his playmaking.
In the 2017 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament, Jose Rizal University head coach Vergel Meneses said Teytey Teodoro cannot be stopped.
Other than by two people, that is.
“Dalawa lang naman ang makaka-stop sa kanya e – siya at ako. ‘Pag ‘di ko siya pinasok, edi na-stop ko siya,” the mentor said then. “’Pag ayaw niyang maglaro, na-stop niya sarili niya.”
Now in the NCAA 93 Men’s Basketball Tournament, the Heavy Bombers’ top gun did not waste time in showcasing his scoring prowess.
Dropping 26 points, thus far the highest output by anyone in the entire league, Teodoro shot JRU over University of Perpetual Help and into the win column on Friday.
That is exactly why the first words out of Meneses’ mouth coming inside the press room for the post-game conference were, “Hindi na na-stop ‘to. Naka-score na nang marami.”
More than his scoring prowess, however, it’s Teodoro’s playmaking that has to come through for the Heavy Bombers to truly contend in the tournament. “I always tell them to think about why we were successful dun sa preseason. We were passing the ball, we were looking for the open man,” the head coach shared.
Teodoro and company exceeded everybody’s expectations and made it all the way to the semifinals in the Filoil Preseason.
Now in the NCAA, Meneses wants nothing more than to see their preseason play carry over. “Sinasabi ko sa kanya, every time na kailangang ma-involve yung kasama niya, nagkakaroon ng confidence yung kasama niya. Yun ang nakita ko sa kanya ngayon,” he said.
He then continued, “Ilang assists? Three? Dati wala e. Dati zero, ngayon three so that’s good.”
Indeed, the veteran guard’s three assists for the day already doubled his average of 1.4 from a season ago.
For his part, Teodoro said he’s only trying to fulfill the leadership role he now has on his shoulders. As he put it, “Siguro, nag-double effort lang talaga ako kasi kaming mga beterano, na-disappoint nung first game e. Kaya kailangan ngayon, beterano na kami maglaro.”
