THROUGH AND THROUGH. Arellano was, without a doubt, going to win or lose by the hands of Kent Salado.
Kent Salado muffed on a couple of charities that would have won the game in regulation for Arellano University on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Given another chance to win it for his team in overtime, he wasn’t going to let that happen again.
The floor leader willed what proved to be the game-winner over the outstretched arms of Abdel Poutouochi and willed the Chiefs right through Jose Rizal University, 73-72, in overtime for a bounce back win in the NCAA 93 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Salado wound up with 25 points, eight assists, and six assists playing 39 of the possible 45 minutes all while showing heart. “We had to go to Salado. We trust him,” head coach Jerry Codinera said, admitting that, without a doubt, their final shot was Salado’s and Salado’s alone.
Arellano led, 62-59, with 9.8 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter and its main man had a couple of charities that would have put them up by five.
Salado missed both freebies, however, and Jed Mendoza’s heave for the Heavy Bombers touched nothing but net to force overtime. “Nagsisi ako kasi hindi na-shoot. Panalo na dapat yun e,” the former expressed afterward.
The two teams were then tied at 71 with 35.8 ticks to go in the extra period before Mendoza’s split from the stripe created a one-point separation for JRU, 72-71.
It was at that point that five-foot-nine guard, with four seconds left, took the ball in his hands and challenged the defense of the six-foot-eight Cameroonian Poutouochi. “Kinuha ko na talaga yun. Sabi ko mula inbound pa lang, sa akin na ibigay,” he said.
The ball kissed the glass before falling into the net for the Chiefs’ second win in three games. “Buti na lang nakabawi pa kasi panalo na, matatalo pa,” Salado said.
Backing him up were Zach Nicholls who scored 13 points and Lervin Flores who pounded in seven points and 15 rebounds.
On the other hand, four players were in double-digits for the Heavy Bombers with MJ Dela Virgen and Teytey Teodoro leading the way with 15 points apiece.
At the wrong end of Salado’s game-winner, however, they drop down into a 1-2 standing.
