WHEN I GET THAT FEELING. AJ Coronel and Perpetual can celebrate at long last.
University of Perpetual Help is not hiding the fact that it is still hurting from how its first game of the season went down.
“Na-frustrate talaga kami sa Benilde. Win na, nawala pa,” veteran AJ Coronel said.
The versatile swingman was referring to their season opener against College of St. Benilde last July 11.
The Altas came out on top in that game, 69-65, but saw the decision get overturned by the league after they wore the wrong uniforms.
Coupled with a defeat at the hands of Jose Rizal University in their next matchup, the Las Pinas-based squad was the only remaining winless team as of last Tuesday.
“Kaya sabi ng coaches, kung gusto niyong manalo, dito dapat. Gawin niyo rito,” Coronel shared.
That, Perpetual did on Thursday as it entered Mapua University to take on the Cardinals. “Gustong-gusto naming manalo,” the third-year player expressed.
Coronel showed just how much he wanted to win in the last two minutes as his five unanswered points erased a one-point deficit and erected a three-point advantage they would keep until the final buzzer. “’Di naman ako actually take charge. Sa amin kasi, kung sinong bukas, yun yung hinahanap,” he said.
He then continued, “Swerte lang, ako yung nakita. Kaya ginawa ko lang para manalo yung team.”
Now the Altas are in the win column, they can celebrate at long last. Asked to describe the emotions he felt once their first win was finalized, the versatile swingman answered, “’Di ko ma-explain yung feeling e. Ngayon, nangingilabot ako.”
He then continued, “Sobrang sarap sa feeling kasi unang panalo tapos home court pa nila.”
And from here, Coronel and company can finally get going in the tournament. As head coach Jimwell Gican put it, “Lagi naming sinasabi sa kanila, just keep working hard at tiwala lang na kayang manalo. This is it. Ito na yun.”
He then continued, “Malaki yung chance namin na makabalik. Napakagandang sign nito para sa amin.”
