FUSION. LPU has two players who can do it all in CJ Perez and MJ Ayaay.

Lyceum of the Philippines University is off to its best start to the season in school history.

With three wins in three games, the Pirates find themselves alone atop the leaderboard – looking over defending champion San Beda College and the rest of the field.

Of course, CJ Perez has been the most distinguishable difference this year as his all-around brilliance has allowed his teammates to shine as well.

That still held true on Friday as the do-it-all swingman collected 20 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

It also helps the cause of the Intramuros-based squad, however, that they have another player who can come close, if not even match, the production of Perez. “Parehas kami ng posisyon tapos parehas kami na kahit saan, pwedeng ilagay. Malaking bagay yun sa amin kasi makakatulong talaga kami sa team,” MJ Ayaay said.

Ayaay – who, like Perez stands at six-foot-one and shifts from forward to guard without a hitch – scored all of his team’s last four points and a total of 17 points in LPU’s big-time victory versus San Sebastian College-Recoletos.

The team captain also had four rebounds, one assist, one steal, and one block.

So alike are the two in being do-it-all players that they have also been the ones huddling up and talking up their teammates in-game. “Kami kasi yung captain ball kaya kami yung laging kumakausap sa team,” Ayaay shared.

While they have similar styles of play, the two, of course, still had to work on their partnership. Talking about when Perez arrived in Intramuros in 2016, Ayaay said, “Pagdating niya, siyempre, season namin, tapos siya nasa Team B. Kaya noon, ‘di pa kami nag-uusap.”

He then continued, “Ngayon, close na kami, lagi na kaming nagkukulitan.”

Now they are doing it all together, the team captain said they only have one thing on their mind. “Brothers na kami and wala na kaming ibang gusto kundi maabot yung goal namin – Final Four para sa LPU,” he said.
