EXACT REPLICA. The Marcelino twins want to be what now head coach Topex Robinson was before - a defensive specialist.
Jaycee Marcelino had for himself his best game thus far on Tuesday.
Tallying 17 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, the rookie was at the forefront of Lyceum of the Philippines University’s 43-point destruction of College of St. Benilde.
Asked about his gutsy guard post-game, head coach Topex Robinson answered through chuckles, “Mayabang ito e.”
Turning serious, however, the always amiable mentor said, “He’s just having fun. They thing about my players is they really work hard and they really capitalize on making stops.”
Indeed, Jaycee and twin Jayvee have, first and foremost, claimed themselves to be defensive specialists.
You know, just like how their head coach was back when he was still playing.
And while they weren’t able to catch any clips of Robinson as a professional player, Jaycee said they want nothing more than to be doing what he once did. “Lagi kaming nagkukulitan ni coach. Diba dati, defensive player din siya,” he said.
He then continued, “Pinapakita namin sa kanya na kaya namin yung ginagawa niya (dati).”
And apparently, their mentor was game to kid around with them. “Nagyayabang nga siya sa amin e. Sabi niya, magaling daw siya e,” Jayvee said.
Jaycee also added, “Sabi niya, ‘di naman kayo marunong dumepensa e. Kung naabutan niyo ako, ‘di kayo mananalo sa akin.”
Of course, the twins have only been returning the playful banter. “Kami naman, tina-trash talk din namin siya na, ‘Wala ka namang shooting e. Kami meron.’ Sinasabi namin, ‘Mas magaling kami sayo, coach. Kami, may shooting. Ikaw, depensa lang,’” Jaycee shared.
Indeed, Jaycee is shooting 37.5 percent from the field and has three triples while Jayvee is making good on 52.4 percent of his attempts. This, in only four games in the tournament.
Robinson as a player? There is no ready statistics, but even he himself would be the first to admit all his effort then was exerted at the defensive end.
