It’s a rarity for Jose Rizal University to come out on top of San Beda High School.

It’s even more of a rarity for a winless JRU to come out on top of streaking San Beda.

But that’s just what happened on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

Banking on a big-time double-double from Javine Serrano, the Light Bombers pulled off the biggest upset thus far in the NCAA 93 Juniors Basketball Tournament by taming the Red Cubs, 77-70.

The boys from Shaw Boulevard had been unsuccessful in their tries against Lyceum of the Philippines University, University of Perpetual Help, Arellano High School, and Colegio de San Juan de Letran before scoring their first win – at the expense of the league’s long-time powerhouse, no less.

Erstwhile winless JRU was going toe-to-toe with San Beda and the two teams were all even at 51 after three quarters. Much of that had to do with Serrano who totaled 23 points and 11 rebounds.

Proving they had more than enough gas, John Amores and John Sicat did the heavy lifting in the final frame and combined for 18 points – nearly matching the output of all their opponents.

In all, the Light Bombers outscored the Red Cubs, 26-19, in the decisive period.

Amores and Sicat wound up with 15 and 13, points, respectively, to help JRU register only its second victory versus San Beda in the last nine years.

On the other hand, the Red Cubs dropped onto a 4-2 standing despite the best efforts of Peter Alfaro who scored a season-best 22 points.

Meanwhile, LPU returned to its winning ways after upending Perpetual, 89-86.

Vincent Cunanan continued his breakout season with a near triple-double of 20 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists.

Running and gunning alongside him was fellow guard Mac Guadana who had 15 points and nine rebounds to help the Junior Pirates improve to 3-3.

Errol Bongay paced the Junior Altas with 20 points and eight rebounds which proved insufficient in preventing their fall to 2-4.
