San Beda still streaking behind Doliguez’s breakout game
I GOT THIS. Clint Doliguez stepped up for streaking San Beda with a bum stomach limiting Robert Bolick.

Robert Bolick and three other players were not feeling well on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

Good thing then that San Beda College is as deep as it has ever been.

First-year player Clint Doliguez showed what he can do in extended minutes as the Red Lions got the better of Jose Rizal University in a grind it out game, 54-48, for their fourth consecutive victory in the NCAA 93 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Doliguez, a transferee from Ateneo de Manila University, was the lone scorer in double-digits for the defending champions with 22 points to go along with eight rebounds, starring as Bolick battled illness. “Since madaming kulang, madami ring kailangan itulong sa team,” he said post-game.

It was also the do-it-all swingman who was at the forefront of the 26-6 surge that erased San Beda’s slow 2-8 start and erected a 28-14 halftime advantage in their favor.

At the half, Doliguez had 14 points to match the output of all their opponents. “Every game naman, ready ako. Basta pag mabigyan ako ng chance mapasok, ibibigay ko lahat lalo sa depensa,” he said.

Of course, the Heavy Bombers didn’t let that be the end of it and made the matchup interesting again behind Jed Mendoza.

JRU was still threatening at 45-48 inside the last three minutes only to see Doliguez drop a long-range missile to put the game away.

Javee Mocon was also his usual productive self with seven points, 15 rebounds, and five assists in the Red Lions’ fifth win in six games.

Bolick still stuffed the stat sheet with six points, six rebounds, and five assists, but was clearly limited. “Robert should not be playing today because he’s sick, but he forced himself to play today,” head coach Boyet Fernandez said.

He also added, “Actually, we have four players who are sick right now – Robert, Calvin (Oftana), Ben (Adamos), and JB (Bahio).”

And so, despite being undermanned, the deep, deep defending champions still had more than enough for their fifth win in six games.

For the Heavy Bombers, Mendoza and Aaron Bordon wound up with 12 and 13 points, respectively.

Teytey Teodoro was shut down, however, only with five points and missed 14 of his 16 attempts to see his team drop to 2-3.
