Altas coach breaks locker room door after ‘emotional’ loss to Knights
THE DAMAGE HAS BEEN DONE. Perpetual coach Nic Omorogbe reportedly punched his team's locker room door in a fit of emotion.
University of Perpetual Help was less than three minutes away from a much-needed victory versus Colegio de San Juan de Letran on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Bong Quinto wasn’t going to let them have it, however, and scored five points and assisted on the other two in the Knights’ 7-0 run for a 63-61 lead.
Still, the Altas had a chance to force overtime, but Prince Eze botched his short stab. Teammate Gab Dagangon got a handle on the offensive rebound but was also pestered by Letran’s King Caralipio.
With the two players claiming possession, referees called for a jumpball.
The possession arrow pointed to the Knights and seconds later, the win was theirs as well.
On the other hand, the decision dropped Perpetual to 2-4, currently on a two-game losing skid.
Stinging from the sorry loss, coach Nic Omorogbe, as per eyewitnesses, punched the door of their locker room.
The result, the upper part of the door got removed from its hinges.
Perpetual did not stay long inside the dugout and was seen exiting the venue not long after.
Athletic director Sammy Acaylar remained, however, and explained that their coach’s action was just due to “emotions from the game.”
Acaylar then went on to say that the school would shoulder whatever expenses there would be in the aftermath.
ABS-CBN Sports tried to get in touch with Omorogbe as well as team captain GJ Ylagan, but both have yet to respond.
This is not the first time that a locker room door inside the venue was at the receiving end of frustrations.
The most recent incident happened two years ago when San Beda College’s Ola Adeogun destroyed the bottom part of the plastic covering the locker room door.
