ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT. San Beda won for the fifth time in a row, but head coach Boyet Fernandez was not fully satisfied.

Robert Bolick is yet to return to full health and reclaim his place at the forefront of San Beda College’s campaign in the 93rd Season of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

As always, however, the other Red Lions were there to pick up the slack in their 66-55 pasting of depleted Mapua University at the Filoil Flying V Centre, Friday.

Bolick and three other teammates were down with a stomach illness last Tuesday and were not yet at 100 percent.

Donald Tankoua, Davon Potts, and Javee Mocon would not allow the defending champions to skip a beat, however, and stepped on the gas pedal right from tip-off to boost them onto a scalding 17-2 start.

They would not let up from that point and increased their advantage to as much as 25, 49-24.

Still, the Cardinals hung around and pulled to within 55-64 with 1:12 remaining, but were turned back, once and for all, by a couple of charities from Bolick.

In the end, Tankoua had an 11-point, 16-rebound double-double while Mocon also added 10 markers and six boards in San Beda’s fifth consecutive victory and sixth overall in seven games.

Bolick chipped in six points, eight rebounds, and four assists while Ben Adamos, JB Bahio, and Calvin Oftana combined for nine points and eight rebounds.

Those were welcome contributions from those four players who were suffering through stomach illnesses three days ago.

However, Fernandez said he was unhappy with how they allowed a Mapua side without top scorers Andoy Estrella and Leo Gabo to keep things interesting in the last two minutes. “I still have to let the other guys realize na ‘di pwedeng ganun-ganun lang ang basketball. I hope my players realize that,” he expressed.

Estrella suffered a knee injury and did not suit up while Gabo left the game in the third quarter.

In their place, Christian Bunag broke out with 20 points, 18 rebounds, and four blocks.

Failing to give him help, however, the Cardinals continued their downward spiral to 1-6.
