HEIGHT IS MIGHT. Arellano had no answer for Prince Eze who lifted Perpetual back onto the win column.

If there’s any doubt that University of Perpetual Help can thrive even without Bright Akhuetie, fellow Nigerian and more than capable replacement Prince Eze put a stop to all of that on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

Towering above all and tallying 23 points, 21 rebounds, and five blocks, Eze lifted the Altas over Arellano University, 68-59, and back into the win column in the NCAA 93 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Fresh off back-to-back losses, the Las Pinas-based squad had nothing but bouncing back on its mind. “Dalawang sunod na talo, mahirap. Kailangang ipanalo na ito para makabawi kami,” coach Jimwell Gican said post-game.

That, they did even early on as they went on an 8-2 start to take control. “Good thing nagtiwala mga players so they executed well,” the mentor expressed.

Indeed, they led by as much as 14 in the third quarter.

The Chiefs also had nothing but bouncing back on their minds, however, and kept on coming, only chasing down a three-point deficit, 59-62, inside the last minute.

Unfortunately for them, GJ Ylagan simply fed their Nigerian powerhouse who again had his way inside the paint for a 64-59 Perpetual lead.

Two misses from Zach Nicholls and scores from Gab Dagangon and Ylagan later, the Altas were back on the win column and moved to solo sixth.

Ylagan wound up with 11 points and eight rebounds while Dagangon added 10 markers and six boards of his own.

The Perpetual defense also stood strong once more and stifled their opponents into subpar 29 percent shooting. “Siyempre, maganda rin na gumana pa rin ang defense namin,” Gican said.

Yet again, Kent Salado was the lone bright spot for Arellano with 14 points, five assists, and three rebounds.

Still without any help, however, he saw his team fall for the fourth time in a row. They now stand holding an uninspiring 2-5 record.
