SAMSON'S STILL STRONG. Was GJ Ylagan's new-look really "pangtanggal-malas" for Perpetual?

Four days ago, University of Perpetual Help surrendered a sorry loss to Colegio de San Juan de Letran.

Leading by five inside the last three minutes, the Altas fell victim to a 7-0 run for the Knights who went on to snatch away the win.

“Ang sama ng game na yun. Nightmare sa amin yun,” coach Jimwell Gican said on Tuesday, looking back at the sorry loss that sent them to back-to-back loses and onto a 2-4 record.

So much so that coach Nic Omorogbe actually took out his frustrations on a locker room door.

Fast forward four days later and Perpetual was laser-focused on its bounce back.

And they did just that, scoring a convincing victory versus Arellano University on Tuesday. “Dalawang sunod na talo, mahirap. Kailangang ipanalo na ito para makabawi kami,” Gican said.

He then continued, “Tsaka mawala na yung sakit nung game namin against Letran.”

Along with a much-needed bounce back, the Altas apparently wanted to win for their team captain. “Talagang gusto naming manalo kasi nagpagupit si GJ,” the coach shared.

For more than a year now, Ylagan had been sporting long locks.

He debuted a new look as his team took on the Chiefs.

Asked about it, he answered, “Wala lang. Personal decision.”

He also added, with a big smile, “Para rin magka-girlfriend.”

Turning serious, however, he then continued, “Pero baka nga pangtanggal-malas nga.”

Fortunately for Perpetual, the Las Pinas native was his same old productive self even with shorter hair. “Kailangan namin kasing maka-bounce back kasi mahirap na, nasa baba kami kapag natalo kami. Good thing talaga naka-bounce back kami ngayon,” he said after contributing 11 points and eight rebounds.

Now, the Altas turn their attention to their home game up against visiting San Beda College on Thursday. “Alam naming malakas yan, pero if we play hard and believe na mananalo kami, tapos baka maka-plus pa ang homecourt advantage namin, very positive kami,” Gican said.

He then continued, promising the faithful over at Las Pinas, “Hindi naman kami basta-basta magpapatalo especially sa homecourt namin.”
