Ylagan: ‘Dito kami nag-eensayo, ‘di pa kami maka-shoot’

STRUGGLE. GJ Ylagan and Perpetual's shots were not falling through their own ring and net while they played on their own home court.
University of Perpetual Help made visiting San Beda College play its game on Thursday.
And any Perpetual game is a grind-it-out affair that features lots and lots of defense.
The Altas successfully slowed down the fully-loaded Red Lions who were only able to make good on 28.8 percent of their shots.
The problem was, Perpetual shot even worse from the field at 26 percent. Asked about the key to the game, team captain GJ Ylagan answered, stating the obvious, “Nag-struggle kami sa field goals namin.”
Adding insult to injury, Ylagan and company were not seeing their shots fall through their own ring and net and while they played on their own home court. “Dito kami lagi nag-eensayo, ‘di pa kami maka-shoot,” he lamented, referring to the UPHSD Gym.
He then continued, “Yung free throws sa huli, sayang. Ang daming chance, sinayang lang namin.”
Indeed, Gab Dagangon and Prince Eze muffed on three-of-five free throws inside the last two minutes that may have changed the complexion of the contest that ended, 57-53, in favor of the visitors.
Still, the captain and his teammates remain thankful that they even had a shot at the defending champions in the endgame.
Of course, the loud and proud Perpetual crowd was a big part of it. As Ylagan put it, “Malaking tulong sila sa amin. Sila yung nagbigay ng lakas sa amin e.”
These Altas should know what they’re talking about as they are the only team in the league to have experienced both sides of the NCAA on Tour – being a visiting team against Mapua University and being a home team against San Beda.
As Gab Dagangon put it, “Advantage talaga rito kasi ang ingay ng crowd namin. Unlike sa Mapua na kami yung kinakabahan, dito, masarap sa feeling kasi todo-suporta ang Perpetualites.”
Ylagan could only echo the same sentiment. “Sa Mapua, sa kanila yung crowd kaya medyo kabado. Dito, ganado kami kasi pag nakaka-shoot, sigawan,” he said.
He then continued, “Nakaka-hype sa players pag maraming nagchi-cheer.”
