ADJUSTMENTS. Michael Calisaan is not sweating the fact that he won't be eligible for any awards anymore.
The matchup between San Sebastian College-Recoletos and Emilio Aguinaldo was also supposed to be a head-to-head duel between the top two forwards in the league in Michael Calisaan and Sidney Onwubere.
After two quarters, that collision lived up to the billing with King Stag Calisaan logging 17 points and two rebounds and Top General Onwubere tallying 12 points and six rebounds.
However, it all came to an early end with Calisaan being slapped with a second unsportsmanlike foul late in the third quarter.
And so, Baste’s main man was forced into the locker room earlier than expected.
Asked about it afterward, he answered, smiling yet nonetheless frustrated, “Ewan ko. ‘Di ko alam. Ang nipis-nipis ng tawag.”
“As a player, alam mo naman sa sarili mo kung unsportsmanlike yun – lalo na ‘di naman sa mukha, ‘di naman sa ulo,” he then continued, trying to explain himself. “Bola naman ang intension ko kaso binali niya kaya tinamaan siya sa braso. Hindi naman sa mukha.”
Fortunately for San Sebastian, guards Ryan Costelo and Renzo Navarro only stepped up to lead them to a much-needed win.
Unfortunately for San Sebastian, their main man will no longer be eligible for any individual awards.
As per league rules, an ejection merits an automatic one-game suspension that will be served in the succeeding game. And as per league rules, a suspension disqualifies a player for individual awards.
Still, Calisaan said individual awards are far from his mind, even though his per game counts of 16.1 points and 10 rebounds make him more than deserving. As he put it, “Wala naman sakin yun. Ang importante sakin, manalo kami at makami yung matagal na naming hinahangad na mag-champion.”
Rather than missing out on individual awards, the fourth-year forward said that missing out on playing at home is what hurts him more. “Next game pa namin sa homecourt namin tapos first time ko sana makalaro sa homecourt namin. Yun ang naisip ko e,” he lamented.
For their succeeding game, the Golden Stags are set to host in Recto on Thursday Jose Rizal University.
Without him, Calisaan wants nothing more than for his teammates to keep stepping up. “Kailangan talaga sana kumpleto kami kasi baka mahirapan yung mga kasama ko sa malaking adjustment na naman. Sana mag-step up na lang sila,” he expressed.
