GUTS. Renzo Navarro and Ryan Costelo held down the fort for San Sebastian after big gun Michale Calisaan got ejected.
Michael Calisaan has long been known as the big gun for San Sebastian College-Recoletos.
With him being sent back to the locker room before the game even ended on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre, however, they still showed they had more than enough weapons especially in the backcourt.
Ryan Costelo poured in all but one of his 11 points in the final frame and Renzo Navarro pumped in all of his five points in the last 52 seconds to carry the Golden Stags over feisty Emilio Aguinaldo College, 75-73, and onto the win column once again in the NCAA 93 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Calisaan was ejected from the game late in the third quarter for incurring two unsportsmanlike fouls. “Sa totoo lang, wala akong choice dahil nawala na yung isang guy na umiiskor so I relied on my guards,” a satisfied head coach Egay Macaraya said.
He then continued, “Buti na lang, Ryan performed at pumasok din yung shots ni Renzo.”
Indeed, his teammates only rallied around his loss as Costelo fronted a 17-8 surge that erased a three-point deficit and erected a 67-61 lead inside the last three minutes.
Still, Sidney Onwubere and the Generals kept coming and pulled to within 67-69 with 68 ticks to go.
Navarro wouldn’t let them come closer, however, and scored five straight points to put Baste back up by four, 74-70, with 13.9 seconds remaining.
Off a timeout, Jerome Garcia kept EAC alive with a big-time triple to close the gap to one only to see Allyn Bulanadi’s split from the stripe and Francis Munsayac’s hurried pass leading to Jervin Guzman’s hurried shot bring the contest to a close. “Lahat ng games namin, close. This time, buti naman kami ang nanalo.” Macaraya expressed.
Though ejected, Calisaan still top-scored for the Golden Stags with 19 points.
Unfortunately, his ejection automatically suspends him for their next game against Jose Rizal University on Tuesday where they try to improve on their 4-4 standing. “Sana tuloy-tuloy na ‘to,” the head coach said.
In his place, San Sebastian will need more of the same from youngster JM Calma who had 10 points and six rebounds in this one.
On the other hand, the Generals fell for the third time in a row and now stand at 3-5.
Onwubere showed the way for them with 22 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, and five blocks.
