Jose Rizal University is now on a three-game winning streak in the 93rd Season of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
More importantly for them, however, Teytey Teodoro has finally gotten into his groove.
Busting out with 19 points, Teodoro shot the Heavy Bombers over San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 73-62, which was playing in front of its home crowd at the San Sebastian Gym in Recto, Manila on Thursday.
Vergel Meneses’ top gun dropped four long-range missiles, none bigger than his back-to-back hits that stopped the charging Golden Stags dead in their tracks.
Baste tied the tally at 58-all with five minutes remaining until Teodoro’s back-to-back threes detonated a 12-2 blast that boosted JRU to its third consecutive victory and fifth overall in eight games.
Putting the punctuation mark in that game-winning run was Abdul Wahab Abdul Razak who hammered down a one-handed dunk and then followed it up with a split from the stripe.
The Ghanaian was also the centerpiece of the Heavy Bombers’ trademark stout defense that only allowed two makes in the last five minutes of the game.
Abdul Razak wound up with 13 points and seven rebounds while Ervin Grospe also added 10 markers and six boards of his own.
In all, the JRU defense only allowed San Sebastian to make good on 27 percent of its attempts – the very same San Sebastian which has been the only squad to breach the 100-point mark in the tournament.
Without a doubt, the Golden Stags did not have the same sort of offense in this one as Jayson David was their lone bright spot with 18 points and six rebounds.
Clearly missing main man Michael Calisaan who was serving a one-game suspension, they fell out of the winner’s circle anew and finish the first round at 4-5.
