TITLE DEFENSE. JP Nieles swished his event-winning shot even before runner-up Unique Naboa could launch his own attempt.
The Skills Challenge title is staying in Intramuros.
Mapua University’s JP Nieles topped Unique Naboa of College of St. Benilde in their head-to-head in the NCAA 93 All-Star on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
The comebacking guard flawlessly completed the relay in each of his three tries.
In the final round, he also left no doubt and his triple try swished the nets even before Naboa could launch his own attempt. “Swerte lang din talaga,” he expressed afterward.
Nieles is the second straight Mapua player to win the event, following the footsteps of Darrell Menina a year ago. “Bago ako pumunta rito, pinanood ko muna ginawa ni Darrell so na-inspire na rin ako sa ginawa niya,” he shared.
Nieles and Naboa ended the elimination round one-two.
Nieles then edged out Jeremiah Taladua of Colegio de San Juan de Letran while Naboa came from behind to steal the win from Lyceum of the Philippines University’s Jaycee Marcelino in the semifinals.
Other contestants included Jose Rizal University’s Aaron Bordon, San Beda College’s Radge Tongco, San Sebastian College-Recoletos’ Michael Are, and University of Perpetual Help’s Keith Pido.
