TOP TWO. Malayan avoided what would have been their first losing slide in the season even as CSB-LSGH completed a season sweep of dynastic San Beda.
San Beda 6-4
San Sebastian 4-5
Malayan High School of Science and College of St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills are still neck-and-neck now in the second round of the NCAA 93 Juniors Basketball Tournament.
Both the defending champions and the legitimate contenders scored their eighth win in 10 games via separate convincing victories on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
The Red Robins bounced back from a shock loss the last time around by jumping on Lyceum of the Philippines University, 81-77.
Malayan was coming off an upset at the hands of lowly Jose Rizal High School and the determination to move forward from that was evident from the get-go.
Carl Lacap scored six of his 17 points and Mike Enriquez also dropped six of his 12 points in the first quarter to lead their team into a 26-16 start.
Neither the lead nor momentum would leave the side of the Red Robins as Will Gozum shook off his personal struggles to impose his will and total 21 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks.
John Barba was the lone bright spot for the now 4-6 Junior Pirates with 21 points and seven rebounds.
On the other hand, the Junior Blazers had to work for every bit of their 76-72 triumph over San Beda High School.
Inand Fornilos both outmuscled and outworked anybody who stood in his way and pounded in a powerful 19-point, 16-rebound double-double.
Joshua Marcos provided the backup with 16 points and eight rebounds. With those two showing the way, CSB-LSGH overcame off games from Joel Cagulangan who only had six points to go along with five turnovers and Albert Bordeos who only had two markers.
With the win, the Junior Blazers completed a season sweep of the dynastic Red Cubs.
Peter Alfaro, Evan Nelle, and Josh Tagala all scored 10 points to top the scoring column for San Beda. Without an answer for Fornilos, however, they suffered their second straight setback and now stand at 6-4.
