Malayan High School of Science has avenged its first loss in the NCAA 93 Juniors Basketball Tournament.

Will Gozum’s two free throws with 3.8 ticks to go lifted the Red Robins over new age rival San Beda High School, 73-71, in their heavyweight bout on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

The 2016 champions and the 2015 champions were still entangled with less than a minute remaining and the two teams were still going at it well into the dying seconds.

That was until Gozum fished a foul from young Red Cub center Sean Garcia.

The Malayan tower coolly converted his couple of charities which proved to be the difference between the new age rivals.

Gozum wound up with 22 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks while partner-in-crime Warren Bonifacio chipped in 13 markers and eight boards of his own.

San Beda dealt the defending champions their first defeat in the tournament in their first round meeting.

Now, the Red Robins have avenged that loss and remained atop the leaderboard with a 9-2 record.

Along with that, they also added to the woes of the Red Cubs who have now lost three in a row and now find themselves out of the top four.

Josh Tagala paced San Beda with 15 points on top of eight rebounds. Now the top teams are out of the way, they can focus on improving their 6-5 standing.

Meanwhile, College of St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills remained in step with the defending champions after coming from behind and frustrating struggling Lyceum of the Philippines University, 90-83.

Joel Cagulangan did it all in collecting 19 points, six rebounds, five assists, two steals, and one block and was backstopped by Inand Fornilos who posted a 17-marker, 14-board double-double.

The Junior Blazers were trailing by 14, 36-50, at the half before Fornilos lit a fire under them.

In all, they outscored their opponents, 54-33 in the second half en route to a 9-2 record.

On the other hand, the Junior Pirates suffered their fourth straight setback coming from a 4-3 start to the season. Mac Guadana led them in the losing effort with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

In the day’s other game, San Sebastian College-Recoletos scored a third win in a row at the expense of Emilio Aguinaldo College, 80-62.

The Staglets now stand at 5-5 while the Brigadiers now stand at 1-9.
