We have a vision to go to, kasi again, this is one thing we talked about sa dugout. If we're goal-oriented, our goal is to make it to the Final 4. But we have to go past beyond that -- LPU coach Topex Robinson
Even with a perfect 13-0 record and already secured of a spot in the Final Four, there is no slowing down for the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates.
“They know that we are not a goal-oriented team,” said Pirates head coach Topex Robinson after his wards outlasted University of Perpetual Help, 94-83, Thursday to remain unscathed in the 93rd NCAA seniors basketball competition at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Intramuros-based squad punched a breakthrough semifinals stint since joining the league in 2011.
But Robinson and the Pirates are looking beyond just clinching a Final Four appearance.
“We have a vision to go to, kasi again, this is one thing we talked about sa dugout. If we're goal-oriented, our goal is to make it to the Final 4. But we have to go past beyond that,” he said.
CJ Perez led the way for LPU with 21 points and nine rebounds with just one turnover in 34 minutes of play.
“Sa 13-0 hindi naman guarantee na makukuha namin ang championship. Pero 'yun nga, andoon na kami, so kailangan pa namin magdagdag pa ng effort sa mga practice at sa game din,” said Perez, who is in his first year with the Pirates.
LPU has five more remaining assignments before closing the elimination round. An 18-game sweep will give the Pirates an outright Finals spot armed with a thrice to beat advantage.
But the road won’t be an easy one.
LPU will face Emilio Aguinaldo College on Tuesday before a rematch against San Sebastian College next Friday. The Pirates clash with Letran on October 6, Jose Rizal University on Oct. 13 before the much-awaited rematch against the defending champion San Beda College on Oct. 19.
“It's gonna be a tough battle from here on because we're gonna play the tough teams from here on, so, again, every experience that we could get is very important to us,” said Robinson. “A reminder to them that winning doesn't guarantee success, same as failure doesn't mean that you're messing up.”
