THE ARRIVAL. The Davon Potts of a season ago is finally here in the NCAA 93 Men's Basketball Tournament.
Davon Potts was missing for San Beda College in the first round of the NCAA 93 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Only norming 5.8 points in 27.7 percent shooting in 21.1 minutes, he wasn’t much of factor in his team’s strong start in its title defense.
“We know that Davon can shoot, but many people have been doubting him because he missed his shots in the first round. Me as a coach and the rest of the coaching staff and the rest of his teammates kept telling him he just needs one game,” head coach Boyet Fernanez shared. “One game where he makes a shot and everything will be different.”
That one game has come and has continued as now in the second round, Fernandez and the Red Lions are welcoming with open arms the Potts who made waves a season ago.
In three of his four outings in Round 2, the second-year scoring guard has been in double digits.
In all of Round 2, he has scored 15 points per game – nearly tripling his first round average.
According to Fernandez, that’s all because the Filipino-American just kept on working. As he put it, “You see what he’s doing now and that’s credit to his work ethic. Sa totoo lang, kahit nagmi-miss mga shots niya, hindi pa rin nagbago yung kanyang work ethic.”
He then continued, “He came in early, took his shots, and then stayed behind after practice to take shots again. Now, he’s getting his shots in the game.”
Indeed, Potts said he has rediscovered his range because he never stopped looking for it. “At the end of the day, it takes work, it takes preparation. We have to make sure we come into the game ready to play,” he said.
More than the Red Lion’s revitalized offense, Fernandez credited his much-improved effort at the other end. “It’s not only the shooting that Davon has improved, it’s also his defense that’s improved really well. I credit him for that,” he expressed.
The rest of the league better get ready as a two-way Potts only makes San Beda more dangerous than ever.
