SAME, SAME. San Beda will be returning to the playoff dance they have gone to since 2006.
San Beda College will be advancing into the Final Four of the NCAA 93 Men’s Basketball Tournament for the 12th time in a row.
Javee Mocon saw to that as behind yet another double-double from him, the Red Lions just had enough to put away Jose Rizal University, 65-60, on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
The fourth-year forward pounded in 19 points and 15 rebounds to go along with five assists to power the defending champions to their 11th consecutive victory and 12th overall in 13 games. “Thanks to the clutch shots of Javee and Davon, we won,” head coach Boyet Fernandez said.
Mocon started strong and led his team onto a 28-10 lead in the second quarter.
However, the Heavy Bombers, slowly but surely, vanquished their deficit. They even led by a solitary point, 57-56, inside the last minutes. “The worst thing that happened, we gave up 27 points in the third quarter. That is not our usual self,” Fernandez said.
Davon Potts finally had the answer and buried back-to-back threes that took back a 62-57 advantage in favor of San Beda.
Both the lead and the momentum would remain with them the rest of the way.
Potts wound up with 14 points built on four triples, continuing his hot-shooting in the second round of the season.
Donald Tankoua also contributed a 14-point, 13-rebound double-double.
Still, Fernandez wants much more from his other guys. “We have to learn to take good care of our basketball so that we’ll have a good chance to be consistent,” the mentor said as he and his boys will be returning to the playoff dance they have gone to since 2006.
The win not only assured the Red Lions of a place in the Final Four, but also handed a twice-to-beat advantage to league-leading Lyceum of the Philippines University.
Remaining at third is JRU which now holds 7-6.
Jed Mendoza paced them with 16 points as Teytey Teodoro and Ervin Grospe only combined for 12 points in 5-for-24 shooting.
