MAKE IT RAIN. San Sebastian was on-point from anywhere beyond the arc.
San Sebastian College-Recoletos wanted nothing more than to trade places with Colegio de San Juan de Letran on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Arena.
Burning down the nets with a total of 16 threes, the Golden Stags got what they wanted after gunning down the shellshocked Knights, 95-64.
With 10 players making good on at least one of their triple tries, Baste emphatically entered the top four in the standings of the NCAA 93 Men’s Basketball Tournament. At 7-6, they are all even with Jose Rizal University for the third spot.
“Ganito talaga yung buhay namin. We die, we live in three points,” head coach Egay Macaraya said.
At the same time, they also dislodged Letran from its place inside the playoff picture.
San Sebastian went online right from tip-off, but it wasn’t until a 20-1 blast in the third when the game turned into a blowout. “Hindi namin in-expect na ganito kalalabasan ng game,” a surprised yet nonetheless satisfied Macaraya said.
From a score of 49-41, four players had four treys that fueled the decisive blast that gave them a 69-42 advantage late in the quarter.
The Golden Stags’ lead would only increase to as much as 33.
In the end, Jayson David and Allyn Bulanadi had three triples apiece and a total of 17 and 16 points, respectively, while Michael Calisaan also added 13 points. “Bigay natin credit sa mga bata. They practiced hard,” their mentor said.
In a slight misstep in what was otherwise a outstanding outing, Baste will not have Alfren Gayosa for its next game after he incurred a disqualifying foul in the final frame.
Gayosa was slapped with the foul after the ball he saved from going outside hit Knight Jeremiah Taladua in the face. As such, he will not be in action when they take on undefeated Lyceum of the Philippines University on Friday.
For Letran, Bong Quinto and Jerrick Balanza scored 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Without the same sort of firepower, in this one at least, they fall behind to their conquerors.
