Lewis Pasamante was all alone for a fastbreak in the dying seconds of San Sebastian College-Recoletos’ matchup with Colegio de San Juan de Letran on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

Pasamante’s layup was too strong.

Squires Kiefer Cordero and Kobe Monje couldn’t convert their own shots, however, and the Staglets weathered the storm brought about by their age-old rivals for a 67-66 decision.

The heady point guard scored 21 points on top of six rebounds to spearhead his squad to their fifth consecutive victory.

Now with 7-6, Baste is knocking on the door of the top four – with the nearest one being fourth-place Letran at 8-6 and the next one being third-place San Beda College at 8-5.

Daniel Rodriguez also added 12 points while big men Rommel Calahat, Damie Cuntapay, and Neil Villapando merged for 14 points and 21 rebounds.

Still, it was Pasamante who sparked the 21-point second quarter that proved to be all the cushion San Sebastian needed.

The Squires were led by Kurt Reyson with 12 points while Niel Tolentino and Enoch Valdez chipped in 10 markers each.

With their rally falling short, they suffered their second straight setback following six wins in a row.

Lyceum of the Philippines University also remains in the running after routing Emilio Aguinaldo College, 92-58.

Mac Guadana had 13 points to lead a total of five Junior Pirates in double-digits.

At 7-7, they are breathing right behind the necks of San Sebastian, Letra, and San Beda.

Arellano High School who is at 6-7 is also still in pursuit a playoff berth.
