We really have to just take care of ourselves -- Fernandez

We won 12 straight, and I don't want to let my boys feel that, ‘Hey, we've won 12 straight games.' -- San Beda College coach Boyet Fernandez
Winning 12 straight and building significant momentum heading into the final stretch of the 93rd NCAA seniors basketball competition, defending champion San Beda College head coach Boyet Fernandez wants his team to guard against complacency.
The Red Lions sport a 13-1 win-loss record and are already assured of a twice-to-beat advantage in the semifinals. But Fernandez is looking beyond securing a semis incentive.
He wants his team to be ready when they meet the unbeaten Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates on Oct. 19 at the end of the elimination round, in a match that could possibly decide the semis format in case the Pirates win their next three games.
“As of now, it's complacency,” answered Fernandez after SBC destroyed Arellano University, 83-72, Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
“We won 12 straight, and I don't want to let my boys feel that, ‘Hey, we've won 12 straight games’,” he added.
LPU handed the Red Lions their lone loss so far.
“I've been telling them, look at LPU, they won 14 games. So we have nothing to be proud of,” said Fernandez. “We have just to stay on the ground and look forward to playing LPU on the 19th. We just have to be ready every game.”
The road won’t be an easy one for the Mendiola-based squad, with games against Perpetual Help on October 3, Emilio Aguinaldo College on October 6 and Letran on October 13 before the marquee showdown with LPU, which has San Sebastian College, Letran and Jose Rizal University as opponents in their next three games.
“As what I've said, we really have to just take care of ourselves. We're looking for Perpetual next game,” said Fernandez.
So we cannot underestimate Perpetual. We nearly lost that game against them in their home court (in the first round),” he added. “So medyo may problema ako. And then looking at EAC, they're still in the thick of the fight for the semis, as well as Letran, they need to win in order to make it to the top four. So for us, it's all bearing game for us. All we have to do is win those games and be ready for LPU.”
