For second straight season, San Beda ousts Perpetual

ENCORE. Robert Bolick and San Beda did again this season what they did to Perpetual last season.
A year ago, San Beda College knocked off University of Perpetual Help in the semifinals en route to the championship.
Now in the NCAA 93 Men’s Basketball Tournament, it’s also by the defending champions’ hands that Altas find themselves eliminated from contention.
Robert Bolick proved his clutch credentials anew as the Red Lions warded off desperate Perpetual for a 55-50 decision on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
It was Bolick who top-scored with 15 points on top of five rebounds all while making sure his squad stood strong in the face of their rallying opponents. “We’re happy with the win, but we got to go back and think about our priorities,” head coach Boyet Fernandez said after they registered their 13th win in a row and 14 overall in 15 games.
San Beda had a nine-point lead inside the last six minutes until Keith Pido sparked a 9-4 charge that neared the Altas to 49-53 with 67 ticks to go.
The King Lion would not let them get any closer, however, and fished a foul from Prinze Eze before coolly converting a couple of charities.
Threatened until the last minute, Fernandez said his wards still have a lot to work on. “Our defense stepped up, but our offense is questionable. I give credit to my players, but I will not take away this game also from Perpetual,” he shared.
He then continued, “They are a good defensive team. We really had a hard time so we’re happy we got this one.”
Backstopping Bolick was Donald Tankoua who had 14 points and nine rebounds.
Along with eliminating Perpetual, the Red Lions’ win also eliminated Eze in the MVP race.
The Nigerian had been the clear-cut frontrunner, but as his team will not be advancing into the next round, he is now ineligible for the award.
No Alta was in double-digits as they dropped to 4-10.
