UPSET. Perpetual took full advantage of the absence of Will Gozum to ground defending champion Malayan.
San Beda 10-5
San Sebastian 8-6
Malayan High School of Science is well on top of the six-squad mixup below them in the NCAA 93 Juniors Basketball Tournament.
Still, the defending champions cannot afford to lose some separation.
That’s just what happened on Thursday at the Filoil Flying V Centre, however, as the Red Robins were at the wrong end of an upset by University of Perpetual Help, 64-69.
Esvin Inliwan and Errol Bongay combined for 13 points in the decisive final frame all while standing at the forefront of a defense that suffocated their opponents in the same timeframe.
Inliwan and Bongay wound up with 17 and 16 points, respectively, while Jielo Razon contributed 14 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and three steals in inarguably their biggest win of the season.
The upset improves the Junior Altas’ standing to 5-10, but doesn’t do much in the playoff hunt as they have long been eliminated.
Still, they played their part to perfection, ruining the win run of Malayan which now falls to 12-3.
Clint Escamis was the lone bright spot for them with 22 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
Without the injured Will Gozum, however, they had a hard time stopping the attack fronted by physical players like Inliwan and Bongay.
They remain at the top spot, but have 11-5 College of St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills and 10-5 San Beda High School creeping up behind them.
