STILL IN IT. Arellano is not going away that easily in the playoff race for the three remaining playoff berths in the NCAA 93 Juniors Basketball Tournament.

Needing a win to stay alive in the NCAA 93 Juniors Basketball Tournament, first-year player Fred Segura came through for Arellano High School.

Pumping in 18 points all in the second half, the transferee shot the Braves over suddenly struggling College of St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills, 71-63 and onto a necessary win on Thursday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

Finding themselves at the seventh spot heading into the game, the sense of urgency was very much evident for the boys from Legarda as they went on a 24-12 opening salvo.

It wasn’t until Segura caught fire after halftime, however, that they got both the separation and the momentum they would keep for the remainder of the game.

The recruit from Davao scored 12 points in the third to keep the Braves ahead before adding six more points in the fourth to keep the Junior Blazers at bay for good.

Kobe Camacho and Nino Tamayo chipped in 11 points apiece while MVP leader Aaron Fermin pounded in six points, 18 rebounds, and two blocks.

Still, even with the necessary win, now 7-8 Arellano needs much more help to catch up with now 11-5 CSB-LSGH at the second spot, 10-5 San Beda High School at the third spot, and 9-6 Colegio de San Juan de Letran at the fourth spot

Also still in front of them is 8-6 and fifth-running San Sebastian College-Recoletos.

The Junior Blazers are also in need of help in hanging on to the second spot and the twice-to-beat advantage it entails. Having lost three of their last four games, they are desperate to rediscover their winning form from earlier in the tournament.

Inand Fornilos was the lone bright spot for them in this losing effort with a 17-point, 19-rebound double-double.
