HEAVY LIFTING. Joel Cagulangan yet again saved the day for CSB-LSGH.
College of St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills has dropped five of its last six games entering its knockout bout against San Sebastian College-Recoletos on Tuesday at the MOA Arena.
Joel Cagulangan was not letting that be the ending to their campaign in the NCAA 93 Juniors Basketball Tournament.
Cagulangan dropped 30 big points and teamed up with Inand Fornilos who had another power performance as the Junior Blazers stopped the Staglets, 108-82.
The point guard also tallied 10 rebounds, six assists, three steals, and two blocks and did everything in his power to keep his team alive and kicking in the tournament. “He’s just getting and better. We haven’t seen the best of him yet,” a proud head coach Marvin Bienvenida said.
Fornilos posted his 24-point, 14-rebound double-double to help CSB-LSGH come out on top in the do-or-die matchup for the fourth and final playoff berth.
The struggles that have plagued the boys from Greenhills were yet again felt in the earlygoing as they allowed San Sebastian to take control and even mount a four-point lead.
Cagulangan kept them in the game, however, and had 19 of his points in the first two quarters. “Kitang-kita na gusto niyang manalo,” Bienvenida said.
Then the halftime break came along and the Junior Blazers finally turned it on. Back-to-back hits by Fornilos punctuated the 17-7 quarter-starting run that, all of a sudden, put them ahead, 62-56.
They would only step harder on the pedal from there and, in all, outscored their opponents, 63-33, in the second half.
Joshua David and Sidney Mosqueda chipped in 17 and 14 points, respectively, in CSB-LSGH’s morale-boosting win ahead of their semifinal date with top-seed and twice-to-beat San Beda High School on Friday still at the same venue.
For the Staglets, Romel Calahat topped the scoring column with 15 points on top of 13 rebounds.
Four other teammates were also in double-digits, but they just did not have enough to keep up with the Junior Blazers’ scorching second half.
Nonetheless, the 11-7 finish to the season is a marked improvement for the rebuilding program.
