Baste shoots down JRU to move up in stepladder playoffs
CHARGE! Just as RK Ilagan stayed hot, San Sebastian stayed hot and moved one win away from the Finals.

Make that three consecutive victories in elimination games for San Sebastian College-Recoletos in the NCAA 93 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Going on a merciless 30-point third quarter tear, the Golden Stags stampeded right through and then right over Jose Rizal University, 85-73, on Friday at the MOA Arena.

The blowout win in the knockout bout boosts fourth-seeded Baste to the next rung in the stepladder playoffs, that one up against second-seeded and defending champion San Beda College. “Grabe talaga yung effort and energy ng mga bata ngayon,” a more than satisfied head coach Egay Macaraya said post-game.

This, after they already came out on top in elimination games against University of Perpetual Help to make the playoffs and then against Colegio de San Juan de Letran to take the fourth-seed.

The 12-point victory is San Sebastian’s most convincing yet as they used a 22-2 onslaught to turn a two-point lead at the 7:16 mark of the third into a 65-43 advantage with 1:59 left in the quarter. “Yun talaga ang game plan namin because alam naman natin na maliliit tayo so ang nangyari, dinala na lang namin sa liksi kasi Stags kami,” their mentor said.

In all, they dominated their third-seeded opponents, 30-11, in the third quarter.

The Heavy Bombers would last threaten at 72-82 with under a minute remaining, but Ryan Costelo and Alvin Baetiong scored three unanswered points sealed the deal once and for all for the Golden Stags.

The boys from Recto were on-point as they counted four of them in double-digits. “Ang maganda sa amin ngayon, everybody is stepping up,” Macaraya said.

Leading the way was RK Ilagan who stayed hot with 21 points built on five triples on top of five assists and five rebounds in this one. Michael Calisaan didn’t come close to his career-high output like the last time around, but he still wound up with 13 points, eight rebounds, and two assists.

They will have more than enough time to prepare for the Red Lions as their stepladder playoff is scheduled for November 7.

San Beda swept Baste in the elimination round.

Jed Mendoza paced JRU with 20 points. However, they didn’t get much from Teytey Teodoro who only had 12 points in 17 minutes as well as graduating players Ervin Grospe and Gio Lasquety who only had a combined 13 points in 6-of-18 shooting.
