NO QUIT. Joel Cagulangan has had all the answers for CSB-LSGH all game long, all tournament long.
College of St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills just won’t stay down in the NCAA 93 Juniors Basketball Tournament.
That’s all because Joel Cagulangan just won’t let them.
Dropping 29 points to go along with nine assists, nine rebounds, and two steals, the five-foot-eight point guard was the first and foremost reason why the Junior Blazers were able to topple dynastic San Beda High School, 110-108, in a triple-overtime classic on Tuesday at the MOA Arena.
Cagulangan absurdly played all but three of the possible 55 minutes in a matchup that had 22 lead changes and seven deadlocks.
The Junior Blazers needed each and every moment their main man was on the floor.
With the two teams still all even at 103 with under a minute remaining in the third extra period, it was the second-year playmaker’s left-handed layup that proved to be the go-ahead basket.
Jacob Lao and Makoy Marcos then made good on four free throws while their defense stood strong to put up a 109-103 with 11.8 ticks to go on the clock.
Not long after, CSB-LSGH was celebrating its first Finals berth since 2013.
All of this almost wasn’t meant to be as they struggled to end the elimination round with only one win in its last six games.
From there, however, the boys from Greenhills won a knockout bout against San Sebastian College-Recoletos for the right to be the fourth-seed, won the first game against the top-seeded and twice-to-beat Red Cubs to force a do-or-die game, and now, won again versus San Beda to stay alive and kicking.
Late in the second overtime in this one, all of this almost wasn’t meant to be again as they were down by three with 11 seconds left.
It was at that point that Cagulangan took charge and buried a booming triple that sent the game into a third extra period.
There, it was all CSB-LSGH.
Inand Fornilos also did his part with a 16-point, 18-rebound double-double while Marcos contributed 15 markers, 14 boards, and four assists of his own.
The Junior Blazers hope they can continue their determined play as they wage war against defending champion Mapua University in the best-of-three Finals commencing on Friday at the Araneta Coliseum.
On the other hand, the Red Cubs will be missing the championship round for the first time since 2008.
Evan Nelle topped the scoring column in this one with 26 points to go along with 11 rebounds, and eight assists. Germy Mahinay posted his own 20-point, 17-rebound double-double.
Even with the loss, it was still an exceptional end to the high school careers of Nelle, Mahinay, and 11 other teammates. They move on to the next phase of their careers with one NCAA championship and one NBTC championship under their belts.
