Coach Tab on Perez: ‘Coach Topex is lucky he’s got him’
GAME RESPECT GAME. Topex Robinson has led LPU to an undefeated record with a tantalizing talent Tab Baldwin would have love to have coached.

Time and again, the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates have said that they are a no superstar team.

Indeed, an entire team that has bought into the run and gun game has propelled LPU to the top.

However, one person has been the engine for the Pirates.

CJ Perez is the frontrunner for MVP with per game counts of 19.3 points in 45.1 percent shooting, 6.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.9 steals all while leading the Intramuros-based squad to a sweep of the elimination round and an automatic advance into the championship round.

One coach away from the NCAA and on the other side of Manila had been nothing but impressed with LPU’s main man. “He’s (head coach Topex Robinson) is lucky that he’s got him instead of us,” Ateneo de Manila University coach Tab Baldwin said.

Perez played for San Sebastian College-Recoletos for two seasons before transferring and spending 2015 to 2016 in Ateneo.

With his time in Katipunan not working out, however, the do-it-all swingman reunited with mentor Robinson now for the Pirates.

If things would have played out differently, Perez would have been also at the forefront for the Blue Eagles who are wreaking havoc themselves in the UAAP.

No doubt, Baldwin would have loved to have seen that. As he put it, he’s one of the guys that I would really love to have made it to Ateneo. We lost him and I thought that was a big loss for us and now, he’s proving how big a loss that was. he’s just a tremendous talent.”

Nonetheless, the American-Kiwi mentor is nothing but glad to see a former Atenean thrive. “He’s playing with the kind of discipline that coach Topex wants him to. He really makes that team play to another level,” he said.

Along with Perez, Baldwin was also all praises for the rest of the LPU crew. “All those players are 100 percent committed to the coach and the philosophy and that’s why they’re winning,” he said.

Here’s to hoping that Baldwin, Thirdy Ravena, and Ateneo will get to face off with Robinson, Perez, and LPU sooner than later.
