NO CHANGE. According to head coach Boyet Fernandez, they only time San Beda will have conquered LPU is when they win the championship.
San Beda College has done what no other team has done in the NCAA 93 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
The Red Lions dealt Lyceum of the Philippines University its very first defeat in the season.
Not even the defending champions themselves were able to do that in the elimination round.
But now, the Pirates are perfect no more – and the 1 in their 18-1 is San Beda.
Tankoua was a force with a 27-point, 20-rebound double-double.
Robert Bolick had 24 points, 11 coming in the final frame, four rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
Javee Mocon also contributed 11 points, nine rebounds, and two assists.
And behind those three, San Beda had more than enough to offset LPU’s run and gun game.
And now, the Red Lions are one win away from their 21st championship in school history – and 10th in the last 12 years.
“Ang sinabi ko lang sa kanila is i-enjoy lang namin itong championship (game) na ito because as we all know, everybody has counted us out already. Today, we proved to ourselves na kaya pala naming manalo,” head coach Boyet Fernandez said.
Still, the always amiable mentor isn’t anything. “Well, I stick to the brand that we are still the underdogs. We just won one game. This is not yet over,” he said.
He then continued, “We haven’t won a championship yet so we’re still the underdog. They beat us twice and they’re still the best, they’re still the favorites for this.”
Fernandez went on to say that overall this season, LPU is still 18-1 while San Beda is 17-2.
More than that, he has no doubt that opposing coach Topex Robinson and his crew will only bounce back in Game 2 on Thursday. “Tandaan niyo, hindi pa tapos ang laban. Alam naman natin na coach Topex is a very good coach,” he said.
He then continued, “This is just one game that we won and we’ll enjoy this one, but Game 2 will be different.”
