San Beda’s Mocon: ‘Mas malaki ang heart namin cause we’re the champions’

HEART OF A CHAMPION. Javee Mocon is nothing but glad that San Beda proved that the road to a title still goes through them.
Lyceum of the Philippines set the NCAA 93 Men’s Basketball Tournament on fire in the elimination round.
Coming into Game 1 of the best-of-three Finals, however, they didn’t have something San Beda College had in abundance – championship experience.
And so, the Red Lions finally solved the puzzle that once was the Pirates to seize a 1-0 lead in the series last Friday.
Along with moving one win away from their league-leading 21st title, the Mendiola-based squad wanted nothing more than to flex the muscles of their championship experience. “This is the Finals, this is a test of character. We’d like to show everybody na sinasabing Lyceum has all the heart,” veteran forward Javee Mocon said.
He then continued, “We’d like to show na mas malaki ang heart namin ‘cause we’re the champions.”
Indeed, that heart has been proven time and again in the last decade or so as they have won nine of the last 11 championships.
Now in a series where they are the unlikely underdogs, San Beda actually has extra fuel to the fire. “We want to show everybody na we’re the best team. Lahat, pinag-uusapan sila e,” Mocon furthered.
He then continued, “Kami, low-key lang, pero we will show everybody na ‘di kami mag-back down.”
Indeed, being all too familiar in playing on the biggest stage and under the brightest lights is the Red Lions’ biggest advantage over their upstart challengers. “The last 12 years na Finals kami, siyempre big pressure and nako-control na namin lahat. Na-experience na namin ‘to lahat so we know how to handle everything already,” he said.
And in heading into Game 2, Mocon had one more challenge for himself and his teammates. As he put it, “Sila lang nakatalo sa amin, twice pa. Na-sweep nila ang eliminations so we have to sweep them sa Finals.”
Game 2 of the Finals between San Beda and LPU is on Thursday at the Araneta Coliseum. All of the action will be on S+A, S+A HD, and livestream.
