After title, Boyet has message to doubters: Salamat sa kanila

Boyet to doubters after title win: Salamat sa kanila
"Yung mga haters and doubters, nagpapa-salamat ako sa kanila," Fernadez said following another Finals victory.

After his latest PBA stint didn't exactly play out well, coach Boyet Fernandez returned home to San Beda.

His latest stint at Mendiola played out exactly how the first one did.

Despite missing out on the top overall seed for the first time in over the decade, Fernandez has once again worked his magic in the oldest collegiate league in the country, leading the Red Lions to a sweep of the Lyceum Pirates Thursday to capture the NCAA Season 93 men's basketball title.

It was San Beda's 21st championship overall, 10 in the last 12 seasons, and it was coach Boyet's third as head coach for the Red Lions.

He won back-to-back titles in 2013 and 2014 and added another chip this year, his first season back.

While San Beda is celebrating the fact that its dynasty is alive and well, the journey to get there wasn't necessarily easy.

The Pirates were perhaps the best challengers the Red Lions had to face in recent memory and there was a time when doubts were placed on San Beda's ability to win it all anew.

It didn't matter come the Finals though.

"Yung mga haters and doubters, nagpapa-salamat ako sa kanila," Fernadez said following another Finals victory.

"They pushed me to work harder and really look at why we were losing to LPU. Sa totoo lang naman kinakabahan ako nung nag-champion kami sa FilOil kasi sa NCAA, pag nag-champion ka ng FilOil you can't win a championship in the NCAA. But I broke that and we won this one, we won this championship. As to the doubters, thank you. I thank you so much for that," he added.

While his coaching brilliance was evident, Fernandez still can't forget his players, his gutsy Red Lions that did the work for him on the court.

His ever so steady Red Lions that bucked two previous defeats to the Pirated and dominate these Finals, showing superior composure and shot-making abilities in the clutch.

"Ako nagwo-work hard pero yung players ko ayaw nila ako ipatalo eh," Fernandez said.

"[Gusto] nila i-prove na tama yung ginagawa ko. And that showed today na kahit lamang yung kalaban, lumalaban pa rin yung players ko para sa team namin at para sa sistema namin," he added.
