A severely undermanned San Sebastian College squad survived its debut match in the 93rd NCAA women’s volleyball tournament despite having only eight available players in its nine-woman roster.
The Lady Stags gored the Emilio Aguinaldo College Lady Generals in straight sets 25-16, 25-19, 25-16, Thursday to open its campaign on a high note at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Veterans Nikka Dalisay, Joyce Sta. Rita, Dangie Encarnacion, setter Vira Guillema and libero Alyssa Eroa played their hearts out in their first game post Grethcel Soltones era for SSC-R’s first win in almost a year since squandering a thrice-to-beat advantage against Arellano University in the Finals last season.
Daurene Santos, Dalisay, Encarnacion and Sta. Rita scored 13 points each while Guillema tallied 28 excellent sets. Encarnacion scored all of her points off attacks while Dalisay had 10 spikes in the Lady Stags' 44-attack output.
The Lady Stags took advantage of the Lady Generals’ spotty reception to build momentum and separation over a team that has yet to win against SSC-R since joining the league back in 2009.
"Yun ang advantage namin. Kapag pumasok ang bola namin, di sila maka-receive ng maayos at di nila madala ang bola sa gitna," said SSC-R head coach Roger Gorayeb, who rued his squad's 25 errors with most coming off the service line.
Dannah Amponin added six points for the Lady Stags while Julie Anne Tiangco was the only player in the eight available wards of Gorayeb who rode the bench to rest her injured right knee.
No player on the Lady Generals side scored in double figures.
Ladeisheen Magnabua and Jaylene Lumbo scored six markers each while Yvette Tongco and Crislie Pablo combined for eight points for EAC, which allowed SSC-R to land 12 aces.
Meanwhile, the Generals swept the Stags, 25-14, 26-24, 25-21, in the men's division while the Brigadiers outlasted the Staglets, 21-25, 25-20, 25-22, 21-25, 15-12, in juniors play.
