Nieza Viray and Cesca Racraquin stepped up big time for San Beda College as the Lady Red Spikers turned back a gritty Jose Rizal University side, 23-25, 25-19, 13-25, 25-19, 15-9, Friday in the 93rd NCAA women’s volleyball competition at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Viray and Racraquin pounded the clutch points and provided good floor coverage in the crucial stretch of the fifth set for the Lady Red Spikers to escape with the win in the one-hour, 53-minute match and join other early winners defending champion Arellano University, San Sebastian College and College of St. Benilde.
The Season 92 Rookie of the Year Racraquin scored two of the Lady Red Spikers’ last five points in the deciding frame as SBC recovered from a 2-5 start with a sizzling comeback to frustrate the upset-conscious Lady Bombers.
Viray finished with 19 points with all but one coming off attacks while Racraquin had an all-around performance with 13 markers, all from kills, spiked with 23 digs and 12 excellent receptions for SBC.
Lady Red Spikers head coach Nemesio Gavino commended his wards for their composure at crunch time.
“(Yung fifth set) ano na kasi yan eh, character na. Nasa kanila na yun sabi ko, ‘Ang mga pinaghirapan naming dapat huwag na naming sayangin,’” said Gavino. “’Yung ganitong sitwasyon kailangang panindigan namin, lamang man ang kalaban kailangan naming habulin.”
SBC went behind early in the fifth set before Racraquin and Viray sparked the Lady Red Spikers’ comeback to tie the frame at 7. The Mendiola-based squad had a 4-1 blitz capped by Racraquin’s hit to take an 11-8 lead.
Racraquin again scored on a through the block kill to make it 13-9. Setter Rebecca Cuevas pushed SBC at match point with an ace before JRU top hitter Shola Alvarez sent her attack straight to the net as the Lady Bombers surrendered the game.
Satrianni Espiritu finished with 11 points while Jiezela Viray had nine for the Lady Red Spikers. Cuevas tallied 32 excellent sets.
Dolly Versoza had 18 points, Alvarez finished with 17 while Season 92 Best Opposite Hitter Karen Montojo got eight markers for JRU, which gave away 37 points off errors.
In men's division, the Red Spikers demolished the Bombers, 27-25, 25-11, 25-10, behind Mark Enciso's 13 points while Adrian Viray added nine markers.
