University of Perpetual Help gave new coach Macky Carino a welcome gift Sunday after sweeping past a limping Lyceum of the Philippines University side, 25-21, 25-17, 25-22, in the 93rd NCAA women’s volleyball competition at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Veteran 6-foot-1 middle Lourdes Clemente led the Lady Altas with 14 points coming off eight attacks, four kill blocks and an ace. Cindy Imbo and Bianca Tripoli added 13 and 10 markers, respectively, while Jowie Versoza, who took the starting opposite spiker spot after Jhona Rosal was diagnosed with a cyst on her ovary just two days ago.

“Happy. Siyempre unang pasok ng taon nanalo agad kami,” said Carino, who came in just two months ago as replacement for Sammy Acaylar after bolting out of College of St. Benilde. “Siguro kasi nagkaroon kami ng kaunting problema bago kami mag-game today kasi may isa akong player na na-ospital kasi may cyst sa ovary.”

After a cruising in the first two sets, the Las Pinas-based squad faced a stiff resistance from the Lady Pirates, who only had eight players available in the match, in the third frame. LPU came back from an 18-23 deficit and closed the gap, 22-23.

Imbo doused cold water on the Lady Pirates’ run with an thunderous kill that went through the defensive wall of LPU but Mery Rose Bongabong committed an error on a joust to surrender the match to Perpetual.

Christine Miralles scored nine points while skipper Bien Juanillo and Monica Sevilla added seven each for the Lady Pirates, who lost some of their players due to academics while Rocelyn Hongria is yet to return from the States.

Perpetual completed a sweep of LPU with victories in other fronts.

Noel Kampton and Ivan Encila scored 13 and 12, respectively, to power the defending champion Junior Altas to a walk in park win over the Junior Pirates, 25-18, 25-20, 25-13, while the Altas made short work of the Pirates, 25-19, 25-13, 25-18.
