Charm Simborio provided the firepower as Letran recovered from its opening day setback to barge in the win column of the 93rd NCAA women’s volleyball competition on Monday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The sophomore, a transferee from Far Eastern University, fired 16 points as the Lady Knights vented their ire on the hapless Mapua University Lady Cardinals, 25-22, 25-17, 25-19, for a 1-1 win-loss record.
Simborio, who plays both setter and spiker for the Mike Inoferio-mentored squad, pumped in 10 attacks and landed six service aces for the Intramuros-based squad.
“Importante ito (panalo) sa amin kasi at least yung mga bata tataas ang kompiyansa going to out next game against Arellano next Friday,” said Inoferio. “Dagdag kompiyansa ito sa mga bata. Kahit papaano ang panalo, ‘yung misyon nila eh nagagawa na nila.”
Elizza Abitan and Kathleen Barrinuevo, who returned as a hitter after playing libero in Letran’s opening day loss to College of St. Benilde, chipped in seven markers each.
Letran trailed, 2-9, in the third set as Patria Pena amd Dianne Latayan heated up for Mapua. But the Lady Knights showed composure, answering with a blistering nine unanswered points to take the driver’s seat, 11-9.
The Lady Cardinals failed to recover and absorbed their second defeat this season in as many outings and 11th straight since last season.
Pena finished with 19 points, all from attacks, while Latayan had nine for Mapua, which gave away 28 point off errors.
In men's play, Mapua scored its first win in two matches after sweeping winless Letran, 25-20, 25-11, 25-21.
