San Sebastian College team captain Joyce Sta. Rita is not taking their short rotation as an excuse in the Lady Stags' five-set meltdown against Jose Rizal University Monday in the 93rd NCAA women’s volleyball tournament.
Despite playing with only one substitute player on the bench, the Roger Gorayeb-mentored squad was able to recover from two sets down only to come up short in the fifth frame as the Lady Bombers ended years of futility against SSC-R with a 27-25, 25-23, 22-25, 16-25, 15-12, win.
Rita, who scored 16 points in a lost cause that pulled down the Lady Stags to 1-1 slate tied with JRU and Letran.
SSC-R only had seven healthy players on its bench after its eighth member, Julie Tiangco, sustained an MCL injury on her right knee.
And it didn’t help that the Recto-based squad gave away 44 points off errors to JRU.
Against a team they have dominated for decades, the Lady Stags were able to control the first two sets early only to fall short both times. Behind veterans Sta. Rita, Nikka Dalisay, Dangie Encarnacion and Daurene Santos, SSC-R recovered in the next two frames to force a decider.
The Lady Stags went down 4-8 in the fifth after committing errors and miscues on their defensive plays that allowed JRU to gather momentum.
SSC-R tried to fightback with Encarnacion pushing SSC-R closer, 11-13, but Shola Alvarez, who posted a career-high 28 points, sealed the win for JRU with back-to-back kills in a 2-1 closing rally.
The Lady Stags will face a huge test on Monday when they take on Final Four contender University of Perpetual Help.
