College of St. Benilde needed some time to heat up before staving off the upset-conscious Lyceum of the Philippines University, 22-25, 23-25, 25-14, 25-13, 15-10, Thursday in the 93rd NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Klarissa Abriam took over in the closing stretch, smashing the game’s last three points to close their second win in as many games for a share of the lead with idle Arellano University.
The transferee from National University scored game-high 18 points with all but one coming off attacks. Abriam chipped in 10 digs on defense for an all-around performance.
Rachel Austero scored 16 points with 11 off kills and five from kill blocks while Marites Pablo, also a transferee from NU, and skipper Ranya Musa tallied 12 and 11 markers, respectively, for the Lady Blazers, who escaped with the win despite giving away 41 points off errors.
Head coach Arnold Laniog stressed that his wards need to start strong in their next games to avoid falling in the same precarious situation.
“Adjust kami dun (sa start) para sa next game. Gusto ko makita pag-start pa lang mainit na agad,” he said. “‘Di ko na feel na over confident kami sa kalaban, sabi ko sa scouting reports, may tao, although eight players (lang ang LPU) ‘yung anim nila lalaban pag nag relax kami delikado.”
The Lady Pirates kept the deciding set close early, 4-4, before the Lady Blazers blasted five unanswered points off Musa’s attacks and LPU’s three errors for a 9-4 lead.
CSB cruised in the closing stretch to hand LPU its second loss in as many outings tied with Emilio Aguinaldo College and Mapua University.
Skipper Bien Juanillo scored 14 points while Monica Sevilla had 11 for the Intramuros-based squad. Chrisine Miralles had nine for LPU.
In men's game, repeat-seeking Blazers captured their second win in as many outings after a quick work of the Pirates, 25-18, 25-22, 25-18.
CSB-La Salle Greenhills improved to 2-0 slate after surviving a tough fight from the Junior Pirates, 25-23, 25-23, 15-25, 14-25, 15-9, in the juniors division.
