San Beda College team captain Cesca Racraquin gathered her teammates moments before the Lady Spikers took center court to face University of Perpetual Help Thursday afternoon at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Narrowly escaping Jose Rizal University in a five-set opening day duel, the team captain gave her team a short pep talk.
She reminded them of San Beda pride.
They will leave the arena with nothing but victory
“Sabi ko sa kanila before mag-start, sabi ko talaga, 'Guys kailangan nating maging aggressive sa lahat ng gagawin natin sa game today, sa offense, sa defense, sa lahat, kasi kailangan nating lumaban kasi pride natin ito,'” said the Queen Lady Red Spiker.
And SBC responded with a resounding 28-26, 25-18, 29-27, win for their second straight win in as many games and a share of the lead with repeat-seeking Arellano University and College of St. Benilde in the 93rd NCAA women’s volleyball competition.
The Lady Red Spikers showed composure down the stretch in the third set to stave off the comeback attempt of Perpetual.
Racraquin had an all-around performance for the Mendiola-based squad with 10 attacks, including the match-clinching back-to-back hits, two aces a kill block for 13 points. She spiced it up with 11 excellent receptions and eight digs.
But it was her leadership in crunch time that fueled the Lady Red Spikers to victory.
"Kasi napansin ko noong first game namin sa JRU, medyo malamya 'yung mga teammates ko. Hindi lang sila, pati ako,” said Racraquin of SBC’s 23-25, 25-19, 13-25, 25-19, 15-9, win over JRU last Friday.
“And alam naman natin na Perpetual, malaking dagok din sa amin 'yun. Malaking bump din sa road na dapat nating pagdaanan,” added the Season 92 rookie of the year, who also finished with 13 points in her season debut. “We went through that, nalagpasan namin 'yun, I'm so happy.”
Nieza Viray posted 20 points, Sattriani Espiritu got 11 while Nieza’s twin sister Jiezela had nine for SBC.
“Iba 'yung level ng play na ginawa namin as a team today,” said Racraquin. “As a team, hindi lang kami umasa sa isang tao. Hindi kami individual today, we played as a whole.”
