San Beda College pulled through in a tight first and third set to complete a sweep of University of Perpetual Help, 28-26, 25-18, 29-27, for a share of the early lead Thursday in the 93rd NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Lady Red Spikers needed three match points to subdue the Lady Altas and join repeat-seeking Arellano University and College of St. Benilde on top of the leader board.
Nieza Viray finished with 20 points off 18 attacks and pair of service aces to lead SBC while team captain Cesca Racraquin dropped 13 markers, 10 coming off spikes including the match-sealing back-to-back kills, for the Lady Red Spikers, who needed to comeback from two sets down in their opening day win over Jose Rizal University last week.
Lady Red Spikers head coach Nemesio Gavino credited his wards for keeping their composure down the stretch.
“Proud ako pero kulang pa rin ang consistency namin eh,” he said. “’Yun nga dikit ang laban pero yung maturity naman ng mga bata nandyan na kaya tiwala ako sa kanila.”
The Lady Altas came back from a 21-19 deficit and tied the third frame at 23. SBC reached its first match point, 24-23, only to see Perpetual save a match point and eventually taking a 25-24 lead.
The Lady Red Spikers tied it at 25 and took two more match point advantages before Racraquin finally silenced the Lady Altas with her attacks.
“Unang-una, tinrabaho namin sa training talaga. Game plan namin kung paano pipigilan ang Perps,” said Gavino of their win. “Inisa-isa namin sa scouting. Talagang napaghandaan namin.”
Perpetual slid to 1-1 slate tied with San Sebastian College, JRU and Letran.
Lourdes Clemente finished with 16 points while Cindy Imbo got 11 for the Las Pinas-based squad.
Meanwhile, Perpetual avenged its women's team with a straight sets, 25-12, 25-17, 25-23, whipping of the Red Spikers in men's play.
Rey Taneo and Ronniel Rosales scored 14 and 12 points, respectively, for the Altas, who joined College of St. Benilde and Arellano University on top of the standings.
In juniors result, the Junior Altas collected their second win in as many games with a 25-12, 25-18, 25-17 victory over the Junior Red Spikers.
