Arellano U snatches fourth straight win, holds solo lead
Arellano University wins its fourth straight win to keep a tight hold of the lead.
Regine Arocha waxed-hot as the repeat-seeking Arellano University Lady Chiefs continued its winning romp in the 93rd NCAA women's volleyball competition.
Arocha uncorked 20 points in the Lady Chiefs' 25-11, 22-25, 25-18, 25-16, victory over Jose Rizal University on Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan to remain unscathed at the solo top spot.
The Legarda-based squad is unbeaten in four games and extended its winning streak to 16 since its championship run last season.
Arocha had a complete offensive game with 14 attacks, five service aces and a kill block while adding eight excellent receptions for the Obet Javier-mentored squad.
Arellano dropped a set for the first time this season. Javier hopes that his team learned a valuable lesson in the match as they move on to their next assignment against Lyceum of the Philippines University.
"Actually, maganda rin itong ginawa sa amin ng JRU para ma-realize ng mga players ko na hindi dapat mag-relax," said Javier, whose wards needed to regroup in the third and fourth sets after yielding the second.
Jovielyn Prado scored 17 points off 15 spikes and two service aces while chipping in 14 digs for the Lady Chiefs. Skipper Mary Anne Esguerra posted 12 points while rookie Necole Ebuen got 11 for Arellano U.
The Lady Bombers saw its two-game winning streak snapped for a 2-2 slate.
League-leading scorer Shola Alvarez finished with 19 points while Dolly Versoza and Karen Montojo had 12 and 10 markers, respectively, for JRU.
Meanwhile, the Chiefs took the solo lead in men's division with their fourth win in as many games after drubbing the listless Bombers, 25-18, 21-25, 25-14, 25-22.
