CSB halts two-game skid in marathon win over EAC

College of St. Benilde snapped a two-game losing slump, but needed five sets to subdue the gutsy Emilio Aguinaldo College Lady Generals, 25-17, 18-25, 21-25, 25-18, 15-7, on Monday in the 93rd NCAA women’s volleyball competition at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Lady Blazers returned in the win column for a 3-2 win-loss record despite an ugly win that saw CSB trail 1-2 in the match.
“At least ngayon kahit hindi pa rin kami well-satisfied doon sa naging performance nila as their coach, tiyagain pa rin namin (silang turuan) hangga’t hindi pa rin namin nakikita ang gusto naming makita,” said CSB coach Arnold Laniog, who endured a total of 10 consecutive sets after the men’s team which he also handles needed five sets to be decided.
Veteran Rachel Austero posted game-high 17 points in an all-around offensive effort of eight kills, five aces and four kill blocks for the Taft-based squad. Skipper Ranya Musa had 15 while Diane Ventura and newcomer Felicia Cui added eight apiece for CSB.
After forcing a deciding set, the Lady Blazers immediately opened a 10-2 gap. EAC cut down the its deficit to 12-6 but CSB ignited a closing 3-1 salvo capped by Austero’s kill block on Aira Binondo to salvage a victory.
Anina Reyes and Yvette Tongco scored nine each while Binondo and Jaylene Lumbo combined for 16 markers for the also-ran Lady Generals, who are winless in five games.
Meanwhile, the EAC Brigadiers kept their unbeaten slate intact after dealing CSB-La Salle Greenhills its first loss in the tournament with a 31-29, 20-25, 26-24, 25-19, victory.
Bhim Diones uncorked 22 points while Ralphj Pitogo and Dan Abarro scored 16 and 14, respectively, for the Brigadiers’ fourth win in as many outings for a hold of the solo lead.
The Junior Blazers dropped to a 4-1 slate.
In men’s game, defending champion CSB outlasted EAC in a come-from-behind 19-25, 20-25, 25-7, 25-14, 15-11, for a 4-1 card.
The Generals slid to a 2-3 mark.
